The Yucatan Peninsula It is usually the first Mexican destination for many. A region with so much culture, with a fascinating history, with incredible natural landscapes, a rich gastronomy and a very safe area. These are just some of the reasons to travel to the Yucatan Peninsula (yes, this region includes the super-famous Riviera Maya), but you'll see that surprises are not lacking. If you have already decided to travel to this corner of the world, but do not know where to start planning your adventures, then we recommend the bestthree-week Yucatan Peninsula travel itinerary.

Considerations:

We assume that the start and end of the trip is made from Cancun. Flights from Spain are not expensive and it is a good place to discover the Yucatan Peninsula.

The best option to discover every corner is to rent a car. It is safe, cheap and easy to drive.

After landing in Cancun, we will take advantage of the change in time to not miss a moment and jump to the first beach of our trip! Cancun is divided into two zones: the village and the Hotel zone. We stayed in the latter, but we recommend that if you can, you also approach the town to mix with the authentic and local.

The combinations are numerous to reach Women Island. From Cancun there are several ports and different companies that arrive on this tourist island. Although the first impression we got was a bit of a disappointment, the experience of renting a golf cart and exploring its farthest corners is highly recommended. They say that here is one of the most beautiful beaches of the Yucatan Peninsula (North Beach).

It's time to rent the car! We did it with the company America, which had a pick up service in Puerto Juarez. After a couple of hours, getting used to Mexican roads (you will see that it is not difficult at all), you will reach the beautiful colonial city of Valladolid. It is tiny and a couple of days is enough, also to make some excursions to the cenotes nearby (such as Suytún), to the Archaeological Zone of Ek Balam, or even spend another day (optional) to reachLizards River.

We stayed at Casa Sisal

Although it is only one day, it will be one of the most important of the trip! You will visit the most important Mayan ruins in Mexico, Chichen Itza (you will leave too much in the morning), and we recommend you stay one night at the magical town of Izamal, all dyed yellow.

We stayed at the Hotel San Miguel Arcangel

Izamal is only 70km away from Mérida, so one option is to make a quick visit to Izamal and sleep in Mérida, to win a night. Merida It is the most important city in Yucatan, with very different neighborhoods, churches and spectacular colonial buildings. In addition, the best restaurants of the whole trip are for us. Do not miss a night visit with the tourist bus! If you have time, you can spend a morning doing the convents route by car, with a visit to the Mayapán ruins. Or a farther excursion to Celestun, and see their curious flamingos. And if you travel at the end of October, you can enjoy the day of the dead * _ *

We stayed at the Hotel Doralba Inn

From Mérida we will make a first stop to visit the ruins of Uxmal, probably the second most impressive of the Mayan civilization. Back to the car we will reach San Francisco de Campeche, a quiet and friendly city, of those places with which you connect to the first exchange. We had trouble leaving there, but what was to come deserved it!

As in the previous stage, halfway through this day we will visit other ruins: this time the ruins of Edzná, with the beautiful Temple of the Five Floors. You will have changed the chip back to the car, because you know that the time is coming to know the impressive ruins of Calakmul. Of course, to make your visit it is essential to have time, so we recommend you leave them for the next morning. The day ends in the city of Xpujil, and if you have time, stop by the Archaeological Zone of Becán, little Calakmul.

The day begins by visiting the ruins ofCalakmul. Although the distance is not much from Xpujil, the road is bad and you will need all morning to make the excursion. But what a beautiful adventure! You will stay with your mouth open. The surprises do not end here, since the next stop,Bacalar Lagoon, It is one of the natural wonders of Mexico (and a magical place for us). Sign up for a sailing tour to navigate the wind or rent a kayak and freak out with its crystal clear waters!

We stayed at the Tribu Hotel

→ What to see and do in Bacalar

If you are one of those ass-restless travelers, you could take a day out of Bacalar and put it to Mahahual, a small coastal town, much less touristy than its neighboring northern cities, and famous for its hippie ambient and its snorkeling and diving possibilities. Here is the second largest barrier reef in the world (after Australia). Here we have mixed feelings: Lety would stay one more day in Bacalar and Rober would stop in Mahahual ... you choose!

We stayed at the Matan Ka'an Hotel

You are already in the heart of the Riviera Maya, you will have noticed because here the tourism is much greater, and finding yourself alone in the places of interest will be practically impossible. But that doesn't mean they stop being interesting! In addition few are precisely not. We recommend you base on Tulum, better than in Carmen beach, and in these three days explore the archeological zones of Tulum and Cobá, make a cenote route, or stop by the beach of Akumal To try to swim with turtles.

In Tulum we stayed at Solera Tulum
In Playa del Carmen we stayed at Anah Suites

To finish big your super trip through the Yucatan Peninsula, nothing better than enjoying a few relaxing days on the island with the best roll in the world: Holbox And if you're lucky and you're not in a sargassum period, better than better! Rent a bike and travel its farthest paths, roast in the sun (well, put on cream, huh), bathe on its beaches and get in the hammocks over the water, take a boat tour around and save some budget to stick Good lobster-based eaters. Not bad, right?

We stayed at Casa Ohana
