Day 4: LISBON - Castillo de San Jorge, Alfama, Tram 28 - BARCELONA

Monday, November 18, 2013

Today is our last day in Lisbon and we have decided that although we have some pending visits to do, the rest of the hours that we have left in this magnificent city, we will dedicate them to enjoy its streets, those that have hooked us so much since we arrived, including a visit to the famous Castle of Saint George in Lisbon.
We get up a little later than 7.30 in the morning and after picking up everything and enjoying our usual breakfast at This is Lisbon Hostel, we leave our luggage in the luggage room and leave ready to get lost in the St. George's Castle in Lisbon.

We are just over 10 minutes walk from our hotel in Lisbon, so before 9 in the morning we are at the box office, taking out our entrance tickets for 7.50 euros per person.

St. George's Castle Entrance

These days we have been in Lisbon They have allowed us to enjoy a splendid city, even more so, with a fantastic, enviable time and more in this era in which we are.
The views from the Castle of San Jorge are probably the best in the city along with those of the Mirador das Portas do Sol that we enjoyed the first day.

At this time of the morning there are not many tourists and we can go through each area with total tranquility, almost alone.

St. George's Castle

Dominating the city, this restored fortification evokes power and bloody battles.

St. George's Castle

The first inhabitants of the area arrived in the 17th century BC, but the castle dates from the middle of the 11th century, when the Arabs ruled Lisbon and the fortress was in the center of the citadel, which has had Christian crusaders in 1147, royalty from the 14th to 16th centuries, convicts in all centuries, battles, coronations and an earthquake.

St. George's Castle

One of the things we most wanted to know is the periscope that wonders speak, so when we find the place where it is located, we see that the visit is guided and we arrive half an hour before the visit in English. But the girl in charge tells us that since there are no people, she will visit us at the moment and in Spanish.
We have been lucky !!!

Periscope in the Castle of San Jorge

Of the 11 towers of the castle, that of Ulysses is the one with the most curious history.
It housed the treasure and the royal archive and was known as the Torre do Tombo (fallen tower) because the most important things in the kingdom "were going to fall" there.
Today, it contains a periscope or dark camera, which offers 360º views of Lisbon Real time.

We finish the visit after 10.30 in the morning and right at the exit we see nothing but a bar / cafeteria where we load energy with a couple of coffee and of course, a couple of cupcakes from Belém !!
The total account is 3.40 euros. Incredible but true, every coffee 0.70 cents !!

Loading energies around the Castle of San Jorge

With a stomach full of energy, we decided that it is time to start walking streets, without too much direction, just for the pleasure of walking and we started doing it through the streets around the St. George's Castle in Lisbon.

Streets around the Castle of San Jorge

We have the same sensations that we had the day we arrived at Lisbon and time begins to pass without noticing more ...
This is life and as we always say, we are privileged to be able to live it in the way we like the most.

Streets of Alfama

As we go through the streets, we reach the Barrio de Alfama, where we get lost again in its streets, with recognizable smells and that mixture of cultures that we love, until after 1 noon.

Alfama has us trapped and if we could we would continue to lose ourselves every day for hours on its streets, full of stories and music of fados.

From here we go straight to one of the stops of Tram 28, with the idea of taking a good walk, although this time with the intention of making the complete tour.

A ride on Tram 28

We arrive at the end of the tour and take the opportunity to get off and take a walk through the cemetery, but the truth is that today we are not mentalized for this type of visit, so after a quick turn, we take the tram again to stop this time in Chiado.

Chiado in black and white

The visits to the cemetery is something that we like, although it sounds macabre, but the truth is that normally we are already "predisposed" for the visit and today it has been something unexpected to enjoy ...
After our second round of Tram 28, we stop in Chiado and it is already past 2 in the afternoon, we go straight to Cervecería Trindade, where we ask for two 18 euros menus, very complete and very good.
And how could it be otherwise, it was time to say goodbye to cod Lisbon.

Eating at the famous Trindade Brewery

It's after half past three in the afternoon and when we leave the Trindade brewery and it's raining! We can not believe it ourselves!!
Throughout the morning a splendid sun has shone and now we find an increasingly dark sky that threatens to discharge stronger at any moment ...

Images of the streets of Lisbon

The Lisbon weather has wanted to give us the truce of these days so that we could enjoy the city in good weather, but has not been able to endure until it is time to say goodbye 😉
So before continuing to wander, we stop at a Starbucks for coffee and wait for it to stop raining and take advantage of doing the online check-in of this afternoon's flight.
When we look back at the clock, it is after 4:30 in the afternoon, so it is time to go back to our accommodation in Lisbon, This is Lisbon Hostel, collect your bags and say goodbye to this amazing city!
It is up to take the tram and the subway again, to do the same route that we did the day we arrived, although this time in reverse, why not leave us in no man's land.

Book your Airport⇆Lisboa transfer here

It took us to get to the airport of Lisbon just over 30 minutes and after passing the security checks, we just have to wait to be notified of the boarding gate while we spend time reviewing our notes Lisbon and touring the stores that always serve us to kill those waiting hours ...
The flight leaves on time and we begin to see Barcelona from the heights almost at 11 at night.
Upon landing we call Aparca i Vola to bring us the car to Terminal 1 and thus be able to return home with that Premium Service that delights anyone!

Today we say goodbye to Lisbon, we hope that with a "see you soon" and we look back towards the "no man's land" ...
To that "no man's land" to which we will return in a month ... to start what will be our Christmas trip this year !!!
WE ARE REALISTIC AND WE THINK OF GETTING THE IMPOSSIBLE
