If you want more information, visit our TRAVEL GUIDE TO MADRID

Do you arrive at Barajas airport? To get to the center of Madrid you have several options:

- METER. To the ticket, which costs € 1.50, you must add a supplement of € 3. From Barajas you will take line 8 (pink) and almost everyone gets off at Nuevos Ministerios, from where you can change and take the line that best suits you.

  • Positive points: it is fast, flexible and very often.
  • Negative points: from 1.30 to 6am it doesn't circulate. To use the Madrid metro you need a transport card. The one that interests us would be the Multi Card, which can be obtained directly from the Metro machines. The price is € 2.50 (does not include travel balance), you can load it with bonuses or balance and it is valid for several people.

If you are going to be in Madrid for a few days, you may be interested in the 10 travel voucher, we will talk about it in the next section.

- TRAIN.There is a train that connects the center of Madrid (Chamartín, Nuevos Ministerios, Atocha or Príncipe Pío) with the T4 of the airport. If you arrive at another terminal you can take the free shuttle that connects the 4 terminals. The price of the train is € 2.50.

- BUS. There is both the airport bus, which runs throughout the day and reaches Plaza Cibeles and Atocha (€ 5) and urban buses (nº200) that, for only € 1.50 will take you to Avenida de América.

  • Positive points: the urban bus is the cheapest option, the express bus runs 24 hours a day. You will not need to take out the transport card, the ticket is purchased on the bus.
  • Negative points: it can be slow and more uncomfortable.

- CAB.It costs € 30 to the city center. Positive points: it is fast. Negative points: it is expensive.

- PRIVATE TRANSFER. They will be waiting for you at the airport and will take you to your accommodation. Interesting for trips of two or more people. The price is € 36 per way. More info

So, what is the best way to get to the center of Madrid from Barajas airport? For us the subway, no doubt.

Use your feet. Yes, Madrid is huge but the center is not so much: you can walk to any point of interest and in this way you can discover secrets that, moving by subway or bus, you would miss.

Of course, a good idea is to buy a 10 travel subway bonusSo, if necessary or, better said when your feet beg for mercy, you can give them a well-deserved rest. The 10 travel voucher It costs € 12.20 and allows you to save some euros (the single ticket costs between € 1.50-2 depending on the area). If you use it for transport from the airport the price increases by € 3.

As we anticipate, in order to use the metro in Madrid you will need to get a transport card. To be only a few days, the most convenient is the Multi Card, which is taken directly in the subway machines for a price of € 2.50. You can load balance or transport vouchers on those same machines and with a card you can travel several people.

More information about the Multi Card

The ideal would be to have a minimum of 4 days, although if you are not afraid to kick the city without mercy, with 2 days you can take advantage of it. Look at this article where we give you a 48-hour itinerary in Madrid.

If instead you only have a few hours to know the city we advise you to decide your plan well, in this article we give you some idea of things to do in Madrid in a few hours.

The 3 most important museums in Madrid (Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen) have free visiting hours:

  • El Prado, from Monday to Saturday from 6pm to 8pm.
  • Reina Sofia, Mondays and Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm and Sundays from 2pm to 7pm.
  • The Thyssen Museum, Mondays from 12 noon to 4 pm (permanent exhibition).

Being free is a very good thing. The bad thing is that, if you are interested in art and want to know museums well, two hours will not be enough, besides that you just won't be alone…

There are also free tours in Madrid (although it is always a good idea to leave a good tip!). Here you have more info about one of them.

How can it be that a squid sandwich is one of the star dishes in a city where there is no sign of a beach ... go go? Well, easy: in Madrid comes the best fish in Spain and, mysterious but true, the squid sandwich is an icon of the city. If you want to know more about its history, check out this article.

In the area of the Plaza Mayor you will find different places specialized in this delicious caloric pump, although one of the best is that of The bell (Snack for € 2.70. Botoneras Street, 6). So squid you know ... to shake!

To enjoy the main museums of the city without haste and not depend on the free schedules, a good idea is to buy the Madrid Card. The ideal would be to make it profitable in a single day, visiting all the places of payment that same day and leave the free ones for the rest. Now, if you want to take it easy, know that there are cards of 24, 48, 72 and up to 120 hours!

It includes, among other things, the entrance to the Prado Museum, Queen Sofia, the Thyssen, the Royal Palace, the Almudena and the cable car 🙂 In addition to picking it up they give you a great guide with lots of information and a super cool map! You can buy it and know more about it here. Its price is € 47 for one day.

Madrid is not just the Puerta del Sol, the Prado, the Plaza Mayor and the Gran Vía ... Madrid is, above all, its neighborhoods, each one with its atmosphere, its history and its unmistakable personality. You should go (at least) Malasaña, Chueca, La Latina, Foot wash and the Neighborhood of the letters.

Although if you have more time we advise you to leave the "center" to know other authentic and less famous neighborhoods ... who knows, you will discover the Malasaña of the future XD.

The sky of Madrid, they say, is one of the best in the world. There are several places where you can enjoy a spectacular sunset, although there are two that are absolutely unmissable: we talk about debod temple and of the roof of the circle of Fine Arts.

If you have to choose one, we recommend the second one ... the views from up there are amazing and at sunset much more. The only negative note is that they are not free: climbing costs € 4 (free with the Madrid Card).

Many say it: Barcelona is more beautiful. But Madrid, Madrid is more fun ... especially if you make the little effort of time travel and you plant yourself in the middle of the move. How? Visiting some of the most famous places of that time: the Penta, the Milky Way and the Sol room, among others.

If you visit Madrid on a Sunday, do not forget to visit El Rastro, the most famous street market in the city. It takes place in several blocks of the Latina neighborhood and among its positions you will find practically everything: from clothes to stickers and crafts. Safety pin. And finally ... reeds in Latin! The truth is that there is no better plan 🙂

Near Madrid there are a few cities that are worth visiting. Toledo, Segovia, San Lorenzo del Escorial, although our favorite is Sigüenza. And not only because it is the town of Rober. Veeenga ok, we may not be entirely objective, but Sigüenza is a charming medieval village.
