〉 TRANSPORTATION

How to get to Venice?

PLANE

  • From Marco Polo Airport The cheapest way is to take an ATVO Airport Shuttle bus that you will find right in front of the departure port. It will leave you in Piazzale Roma in about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic, from here you can walk, to Rialto for example it is 20 minutes, see schedule. The ticket costs € 8 (€ 15 round trip). Actually it corresponds to the urban bus line number 5, but for the fact of arriving at the airport the price is so high. You have the option of walking to the first stop outside the airport that is Tessera Centro, 1km away, and take it there, see schedule. The price in this case is € 1.50, you can buy the ticket at the Annia Park Hotel, next to the road.
  • From Treviso Airport there are direct buses to Piazzale Roma with the same ATVO company. The trip takes about 1 hour and the ticket costs about € 15. See schedule. You have the slowest but cheapest option: first take the urban bus number 6 to the train station (20 minutes, € 1.30, the ticket must be taken at a tobacconist or points of sale at the airport) and from there take a train to Venezia Santa Lucia (40 minutes, € 3.35).

TRAIN

The Venice station is called “Santa Lucia” and is connected to the main Italian destinations frequently. If you go out from Mestre (the closest city to Venice) every 5-10 minutes trains leave for Venice from platform # 1. The ticket costs just over € 1 and the trip only takes about 10 minutes. In addition the views of the arrival in Venice are very beautiful!

BUS

With the boom of low cost bus companies we are in luck! There are buses that arrive and depart from Venezia Tronchetto to very varied destinations:

  • Eurobus: connects Venezia with Florence, Naples, Padova, Rome, Turin and Verona. Look at their website to check new destinations.
  • Flixbus: connect Venezia with Italian destinations such as Milan, Turin, Genoa, Bari, Pescara ... and other Europeans such as Munich, Ljubljana, Vienna, etc. This is your website.

For get to Tronchetto You can do it on foot, although we advise you to take the People Mover from Piazzale Roma, it costs € 1.50 and there are two stops.

If you get to Mestre you can get to Piazzale Roma with the buses number 2, 4, 7, 12 and 24.

CAR

The million dollar question: Where to park in Venice? If you want to get to Venice with your own car you can choose parking in two areas:

  • Piazzale Roma: there is a public car park (Autorimessa Comunale), with a single price for 24 hours of € 26 (€ 23.40 if booking is made from the web). If you are leaving the car for a few hours inside this parking lot, there is the Parcheggio S. Andrea, which charges € 7 every two hours. If you do not find a place in this you can go to the neighboring Garage San Marco, which charges € 30 24 hours a day. From Piazzale Roma to the center you can go on foot or by vaporetto.
  • Tronchetto: Tronchetto parking has better rates and interesting promotions (if you arrive by cruise, if you leave the car 3 days, give discounts on attractions ... etc). The price is € 3 / hour in the first two hours, € 5 / hour in the next two and € 21 if you have more than 5 hours and up to 24 hours.

One option is to leave the car in a Mestre parking and arrive in Venice by train / bus.

How to get around the city?

Basically there are two ways: walk or navigate!

FEET

The historic center is not large and moving on foot, apart from being the cheapest way, is very interesting: there is nothing like getting lost in the streets of Venice! Just be prepared to sweat the fat drop: it is full of stairs and bridges everywhere (your booty will thank you!). Although it is best to get lost, there are signs in each corner that indicate the main points of interest.

VAPORETTO

It is a kind of collective boat that we are not very fans of: the 1-hour ticket costs € 7! But it is also true that navigating the big channel is a must ... and once in a lifetime you have to do it, especially if the alternative is the gondola: that is expensive! If you plan to take the vaporetto more than once, you may have to consider buying a bonus: the 24-hour one costs € 20, the 48-hour one costs € 30. All tickets are purchased at the tobacconists, bars and kiosks (you can buy directly on the boat although they cost more).

GONDOLA

It is perhaps one of the symbols of Venice, although many of us are satisfied with taking a photo from a distance since it is very expensive! How much does it cost to go by gondola?A 40-minute gondola ride can cost 80 € quietly: arg! If it is already decided, before accepting the price try to negotiate it. But if it makes you very excited there are a couple of tricks ... or share gondola with other people and save money or ...

TRAGHETTO

It is a kind of largest gondola that the tourist, the they use the "veneziani" to cross the canal from one side to the other. The mini-trip costs 2€! It's not as romantic as the gondola since you have to stand next to more people, but it's a good way to live the experience saving!

> ACCOMMODATION

Where to sleep in Venice?

Let's not fool ourselves,Venice is an expensive city, but still there are cheap options for sleeping without having to end up under a bridge (although sleeping under Rialto's would have its charm, right?). Many people stay to sleep in the nearby city of Mestre, although the neighboring accommodations at the train station are not a bargain ... It would also be a shame not to spend the night in Venice since when the sun leaves room for the moon it is truly a spectacular city! (He thinks that most tourists will be gone and you won't have to "fight" with anyone to enjoy the best views).

So we advise you to stay in Venice, even at least one night! And it is true: the hotels are expensive, so why not choose to rent an apartment? It is a good option, especially if you travel with friends! And also if the apartment has a kitchen, you can reduce the cost of eating and kill two birds with one stone (my mother who says so sinister!). Check out the websites of Airbnb or Wimdu, or search for cheap hotels in Venice on Booking.

An interesting area is in the immediate vicinity of the Rialto bridge, halfway between San Marco and Piazzale Roma. If you are not very busy you can reach the accommodation on foot (and save yourself a little money in vaporetto) and you will be in the center of Venice, a short walk from San Marco.

We have prepared a list with the better options in terms of quality / price / location in Venice, just click on the image:

> FOOD

Eating well in Venice without spending a million is possible, you have to be guided by common sense and follow these tricks:

  • NO TO TOURIST MENUS: many times drinks are not included and cost a lot, also go to Venice and eat "cotoletta a la milanesa" or "pasta with ragout Bolognese" is a mistake! The local cuisine is rich and delicious.
  • EYE TO THE "COPERT": in Italian restaurants they charge the “coperto” as bread and cutlery. Look how much it costs: it should not be worth more than € 1 or € 1.50.
  • GET AWAY FROM TOURIST SITES: Obviously, if you eat in the Plaza San Marco they will crack! Stay away from tourist sites!
  • RESTAURANTS LIST: We leave you a post with a list of several restaurants in Venice where to eat without leaving your salary for a month.

If your budget is not enough to eat in a restaurant there are different options to fill the belly:

  1. Pizzas cut: A “trancio” of pizza costs between € 1.50 and € 3.00.
  2. Panini : in Italy there is a great variety of sandwiches (panini) and all delicious ... our favorite is speck and cheese.
  3. Ice creams: Italian gelato is requetebueno, and a ball normally costs € 1 - € 1.50 ... if you are charged more than € 2 it is a scam!
  4. Cicchetti : they are the tapas venetas that are taken in the typical tascas of Venice: the bacari ... meatballs, toasts, skewers ... delicious and with prices from € 1. We leave you a post with a route through the Bacari of Venice.
  5. Picnic: Find a supermarket and buy bread / sausage or whatever you want and go eat it at your leisure (be aware that there are areas where you can not eat ... like Plaza San Marco). There are not many supermarkets in Venice but one option is theSUPERMERCATO ISSIMO GRUPPO SISA - Calle del Forno, 2661🙂
  6. Search happy hour: In many places around 7pm there is happy hour ... you have a drink and included in the price you have a free buffet of potatoes / salad / skewers and in some cases pasta / rice. The consumption entitled to the buffet costs from € 5 or € 6.

If you want you can see the main typical dishes of Venice and learn a little about the veneta gastronomy here.

〉 TICKETS AND TICKETS

How much are the tickets?

These are the prices of the main monuments and attractions:

  • SAN MARCO BASILICA: The entrance to the Basilica is free, although you will have to suck a good tail (how bad this sounds ...), you can avoid them for € 2 by booking here. If you want to visit the Treasury (€ 3), the Museum (€ 5) and the Pala d'Oro (€ 2) you will have to pay during your visit. More information here.
  • CAMPANARIO or CAMPANILLE DE SAN MARCO: climbing to the top of the bell tower costs € 8.
  • DUCAL PALACE: at the € 19 entry, it is a pass from the Museums of Piazza San Marco and includes the entrance to the Correr Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Martian Library, as well as the Palace. There are options of guided tours in the Palace at a good price. Although if you want to have a complete tour we recommend this one, with guided visits to Venice, the Basilia and the Ducal Palace.
  • RIALTO BRIDGE: free.
  • PEGGY GUGGEHNEIM MUSEUM: 15€.
  • DI STORIA NATURALE MUSEUM: 8€.
