It was one of the great adventures of our trips. Touring southern India by motorcycle had something adventurous, improvised, authentic, crazy. But he showed us another face of India. Here you have our summary guide of our motorcycle trip through southern India.

Our trip through southern India had an unexpected companion:Gambit. Our 125 CC Hero Master who behaved like a champion! With it we toured the region ofKerala, departing from Kochi and pulling south. Then we move on to the region ofTamil Nadu, where we visit the southernmost tip of India and lots of historic cities and wonderful temples.

In total there were 18 days in which we traveled 2,088 km spread over 10 stages:

  • Stage 1: Kochi - Varkala. 196 km / 6 hours
  • Stage 2: Varkala - Kanyakumaru. 164 km / 6 hours
  • Stage 3: Kanyakumari - Madurai. 252 km / 5 hours
  • Stage 4: Madurai - Thanjavur. 200 km / 4 hours
  • Stage 5: Thanjavur - Pondicherry. 202 km / 4.5 hours
  • Stage 6: Pondicherry - Mamallapuram. 100 km / 2 hours
  • Stage 7: Mamallapuram - Thiruvannamalai. 186 km / 4.5 hours
  • Stage 8: Thiruvannamalai - Tiruchirappalli. 200 km / 4 hours
  • Stage 9: Tiruchirappalli - Kodaikanal. 200 km / 5 hours
  • Stage 10: Kodaikanal - Kochi. 322 km / 10 hours

Here is our interactive map of the tour of southern India by motorcycle:

In total we spent 3,250 INR of gasoline for 2,088 km (about € 60). It has an average price of76 INR liter. Approximately we travel every 100 km for 155 INR of gasoline.

The motorcycle is a Hero Master of125 CC. It is an automatic scooter that went like silk. We did not want to put it to the top but it perfectly maintained speeds of70 and 80 km / h. Normally we alternated periods at different speeds. In addition every two hours or so we made a stop of about 30 minutes, always leaving the motorcycle at idle for a couple of minutes before turning it off, and parking it in the shade.

We rent the motorcycle in Kochi, at the San Mike agency, in the tourist part of Fort Kochi. They also have a tiny guesthouse. It costed usINR 325 per day. If you rent the motorcycle somewhere else (it's Goa) it will be cheaper for sure (about 200 INR per day) but in Kochi it is more expensive ... doh!

We advise 100% to move in this way because you have many more options to know places where you would never end up, meeting very interesting and very authentic people. It also gives you more freedom and flexibility in the tour.

Of course we are not going to deny that it is quite heavy, the back will throw it in your face and you will end up dreaming of the road ... but ... take it away!

This was ours motorcycle trip through southern India, a journey of 18 days and more than 2,000 km that we will remember forever.
