¿You can eat healthy in the United States? This is one of the questions that you usually ask yourself when you plan to spend time there ... We ourselves ask ourselves when planning the trip, and once back, we will try to answer with our experience.

Those who know us know that resisting culinary temptations does not go with us, so during these two months in the United States we have succumbed again and again to the calorie fair, since we were going to walk a lot, we ate what that we wanted because total ... we were going to burn -_- Well no.

But it has not been all to pull fast food from bad and saturated fat, because in the United States you can eat healthy! You do not believe it? Keep reading because we are going to tell you a few tricks and solutions to return from the US without looking like a seal with collapsed cholesterol arteries.

Eye: soon we will publish another post with 20 dishes that you must try in the United States (you should not be in the land of hamburgers and eat lettuce and carrot every day, huh).

toThere is cities where eating healthy is easier (we talk, especially, about big cities like New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles)
toEating healthy is more expensive (Fast food has very, very, very competitive offers and an apple can cost like a hot dog. Or more.)
toIn many menus they are indicated calories of the dishes, this helps the not very pro in understanding the caloric intake of food.
toEvery time is easier Eat healthy, so aupa that moral!

Everyone points the accusatory finger at the United States when talking about how harmful fast food restaurants are (or how good they are, it depends on the point of view), but nobody remembers that in the land of caramelized apples adapted very well another equally important movement: the slow food.

But what is it? Slow food is a trend that claims organic, healthy, local and sustainable cuisine. And yes, there are many options in the United States. There are even fast food chains that have signed up for a slow philosophy. Some of them are:

  • www.bgood.com: salads, bowls and healty burgers, vegetarian options.
  • www.justsalad.com: perfect if you're a salad salad. It's not my case.
  • www.veggiegrill.com: vegetarian chain with a lot of variety of dishes with pint.
  • www.theproteinbar.com: veg and no options, with very tasty dishes and smoothies.
  • www.aubonpain.com: a lot of variety, although the best are wraps and sandwiches.
  • www.zoup.com: soups of all kinds, style and flavor. There are also sandwiches.
  • www.sweetgreen.com: very rich bowls, both veg and not.
  • www.panerabread.com: snacks, bowls, soups and breakfast options.

* Check the locations of each one, because there is no pity in every city.

We personally love meat, but every time we are trying to eat less: there are products that have the same nutritional contribution and are healthier and more environmentally friendly. A few days ago we watched the documentary "Cowspiracy" and we were quite impressed ... we highly recommend it!

Eat vegetarian (and vegan) Not only is it ethically good, it will also allow you to enjoy healthy eating. There are more and more vegetarian / vegan restaurants and the United States is no exception.

A good idea, to know which veggies restaurants are near you, is to take a look at this website.

Keep in mind that even if you eat a pizza, a hamburger or a plate of fried chicken (not all together, of course, or every day), nothing happens: when we travel we move much more and burn calories faster. The problem is when, with the dish, you order a sugary drink and in most fast food the refills They are free.

Liquid calories are bad. Water (which also in the US) always serve for free is good. Remember it.

Probably the cheapest way to eat healthy in the United States is to buy in supermarkets and cook yourself ... if you have a kitchen in the accommodation, of course. Anyway do not worry, there are a few “green” supermarkets that have bars of food to the weight and where you can buy ready dishes (salads, sandwiches, sushi, chicken, pasta, creams ...) that can get you out of trouble. It is the case of:

  • www.wholefoodsmarket.com (the most famous and the one with the best locations for tourists!).

* As always check the locations, since not all supermarkets are present in all states.

If you travel to New York you will be lucky enough to run into almost constantly with Delis (There are also in other cities ... but not so many!). They are small neighborhood stores where you can buy food by weight (among other products), it is an excellent alternative to eat well and healthy. Price? Calculate about $ 6-10.

Yelp is the best fucking thing there is. Well, the enthusiasm may have shot me up, but I love Yelp! It is a website where there are missiles and restaurant reviews, with photos, menus and reviews. It's like the American Tripadvisor for foodies.

If you are going to the United States and you are worried about the food issue, I advise you to take a look before the trip ... you can make filters of type of food, price and areas.

We often travel badly while traveling because, not knowing where to go, we eat at the first place that catches us when we are hungry. However, with a little planning, we can point out some interesting restaurants where we can eat: if we know that on Wednesday we will visit the West Village in the morning, well ... you know where to look 😉

I am very freaky of XD restaurants
