Day 5: INNSBRUCK - THE KRIMML CATARACTS - HEILENGENBLUT - GROSSGLOKNER ROAD - OBERTRAUN

Sunday, June 27, 2010

Today we wanted to leave early, but in the end, between one thing and another, they gave us 8 in the morning when we were leaving the Best Western Hotel Engl and we took the rental car in Austria towards the Krimml Falls and the Grossglockner Road.
We have passed through the Gerlos pass where we have been charged 7.50 euros. Here we have started our “extra payments” day, of course, it is totally worth paying, because the views are impressive.
It took us an hour and it measured more or less and the first thing that catches our attention is the amount of people we see in the parking lot and the surrounding area.
We have decided that we will only go to the area where “Krimml falls” break, because we are going just in time and doing the complete tour would take us too long.

You have to pay 2 euros per person and from the ticket offices, you can hear the noise of the falls. Awesome. As we get closer we begin to feel the drops fall on us and suddenly: there they are, Krimml Falls

Krimml Falls

We are taking pictures for a long time, but with the amount of people there, it is impossible to relax with the landscape and that is what I try, while Roger goes up to the first viewpoint, but nothing, it is impossible, just arrive people and more people

So, as soon as Roger goes down, we decide that it is time to get on our way to Lienz, which will be our stop to eat.
It takes 1 hour and a half to arrive and we go directly to an Italian restaurant to eat.
Our idea was to visit the town, but seeing the time, we decided to go directly to the Grossglockner road, which is the point that we most want today.

Austrian landscapes

We are late in arriving at Heilengenblut (the town where the road begins) 1 hour or so and we begin to see what awaits us….
Winding roads between snowy mountains and valleys, spectacular.

Austrian landscapes

Now writing this, I realize that you can't describe with words, you have to see it.

Grossglockner Road

It took us 4 hours to travel the Grossglockner road, stopping at each point that we have marked and that are all those that are marked in the brochure that they have given us at the box office (we have paid 28 euros).

Grossglockner Road

When we were in front of the Grossglockner, we have decided that we would go down with the funicular to the Glacier.
What we have asked ourselves is the time of the last funicular until after taking out the tickets (18 euros).

When asked, we were told that the last one was at 4.30 in the afternoon and it is 4 in the afternoon, so we don't have much time.
And the next surprise has been, that once down, there is a spectacular flight of stairs.
Seeing this and knowing that we had only half an hour to make the descent, tour the glacier and climb again, I have chosen to stay in the first quarter of the way and let Roger go down to the bottom.

Grossglockner Road

While Roger has armed himself with courage and has decided to do everything in 25 minutes, he already has a "crime."
While I took the opportunity to delight in the landscape and make countless photographs, until I have seen it appear almost with the stomach in the mouth.
The truth is that it is worth the visit, but with more time.
After this anecdote we have seen that we were very fair in time and tonight we have the hotel in Obertraun, so we have started to make the part of the road that was a little faster, although we have left few viewpoints to see .

Grossglockner Road

I repeat that it is spectacular, no wonder they say it is the best panoramic road in Europe.

Grossglockner Road

In the end we have left at 7 and a little and our hotel, the Apartment Hotel Seerose, has check in until 9 at night, so we have begun to accelerate the march a bit.
As usually happens when we are in a hurry, there is always something against us: works on the highway, our GPS puts us on secondary roads, we are wrong to exit on the highway ...
All this and a stop for a fast food dinner and it turned out that at 9.02 at night we were entering through the hotel door.
The owner was already waiting for us with the face of few friends, which has changed as soon as he has seen us enter.
We have the june suite, overlooking the lake (overlooking a little piece, because we have another hotel in front), but for 90 euros we can not ask for anything more and less in this area, where hotels are especially expensive.
Now we have to rest and remember the things we have seen today, not forgetting everything we are living on this trip to Austria.
We will probably never see any landscape like the ones we have seen today.
