Chapel of the Bones in Evora in the Alentejo region of Portugal

If you haven't visited it yet, maybe your image of Evora, in Portugal, is linked to monuments as its roman temple or his Gothic cathedral, but I already advance the existence of a corner visited by those who arrive in this city of the Alentejo region.

I refer to the so-called Chapel of the Bones, corner that occupies the space of the former presbytery of the San Francisco church.

Of course, in my recent journey through Alentejo I could not miss this visit not suitable for all audiences, because you can not hide his character at a certain macabre point.

There are other bone chapels in other European countries. Specifically in Czech Republic you can visit a similar chapel in Kutna Hora, and in the same country you find another place even more macabre, as is the Capuchin Crypt in Brno, which I visited on my last trip to the Czech Republic.

The Chapel of the Bones of Evora dates back to the 16th century, when the Franciscan friars of the monastery had the idea of creating it for «reflect on the human condition, the passing value of earthly life and meditate on eternal and definitive life»

Although the church of San Francisco was closed to the public works visit, if it was possible to access through a back door directly to the Bone Chapel.

The first thing you have to notice is the phrase that is written on the entrance door to the chapel, which says: «nthe other bones that we are here, we wait for you ».

Visit Chapel of Bones

What will you find in the Chapel of the Bones?

Well, a large room of less than 20 meters long, with just three windows that give access to natural light, whose walls and columns are covered with thousands of human bones.

Specifically it is estimated that there are some 5,000 skulls and thousands of bones, all of them collected in their day from church cemeteries of Evora.

Since my visit also coincided with conservation work in the chapel, one of the most striking elements of it had been removed, two dissected bodies of a man and a young man.

The legend says that they were father and son, and that the latter mistreated his mother with the consent of the father, and that the latter, when he died, threw them the following curse:May the land of your graves not destroy you!

In short, a place not suitable for all tourists ... but that attracts the attention of many.
