The Vision of Lisbon in the Lisbon Tile Museum

One of the goals of my lasttrip to Lisbon it was to visit a museum that is not usually included in the most common tourist routes in the Portuguese capital, but that has a special appeal.

I mean the Tile Museum, national institution that reflects one of the most famous artistic traditions of Portugal.

The museum is halfway between the Commerce Square, On the banks of Tagus river in the heart of the city, and the park of the nations, the most modern area of Lisbon where you find an attraction such as the Oceanarium, very suitable for family visits.

The headquarters of Lisbon Tile Museum is the old Convent of Mother of God, which was founded in 1509, and where you will be able to see some architectural corner that already makes the visit well worth it.

Indeed, this convent is a building with two cloisters, one of Renaissance style and another Manueline, whose Rococo style church will surely surprise you.

This church was initially built in the mid-16th century, but two centuries later it was redecorated in Rococo style after the earthquake that struck Lisbon in 1755.

Now you will be able to see its splendid decoration, both of the main nave and the choir of the upper floor.

But the argument that led me to visit the Azulejo museum it was the awesome panoramic tile set which shows how Lisbon was just before the aforementioned earthquake.

Known as the Lisbon Vision, this huge panoramic tile was made in the early eighteenth century and was in the old Palace of the Counts of Tentúgal.

When touring the panorama you will check the changes that are currently in the urban landscape of Lisbon compared to what the city was like before the earthquake.

In addition to this artistic work, the most important of the museum, the three floors of it will see a wide collection of tiles with works from the 16th to the 20th century, which are shown on the walls as if they were pictorial works.

You will also see some tiles of Arab origin and a room dedicated to the origins of the tile.

Finally, I advise you to visit the cafeteria of the museum, which, as expected, has a beautiful decoration ... with tiles.
